Molly and her Seven Puppies Receiving Care at Arizona Humane Society; AHS in Need of Foster Heroes for Dog Moms and Pups

PHOENIX (May 24, 2023) – A mama dog has overcome the odds after surviving a rattlesnake bite and subsequently giving birth on an Arizona Humane Society (AHS) Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ (EAMT™) pet ambulance on the way to the shelter’s trauma hospital. Now named Molly, the one-year-old Cattle Dog mix and her seven one-week-old puppies are currently receiving medical care in AHS’ Mutternity Suites.

Last week, AHS’ Field Dispatchers were alerted to a homeless, pregnant dog receiving medical care at a local emergency animal clinic after reportedly being bitten by a rattlesnake. Upon arrival, AHS EAMTs learned Molly had received antivenom treatment and had already given birth to three puppies. Molly and her three pups were immediately transported to AHS’ trauma hospital where, much to the EAMTs’ surprise, it was found that Molly had given birth to two additional babies while on the truck!

Molly and her five puppies underwent medical evaluations prior to being placed in AHS’ Mutternity Suites, a quiet, medically supervised area for pregnant and nursing dogs to give birth and care for their puppies, where an additional pair of puppies were born later that evening. Now with a total of seven healthy and active puppies, Molly and her babies continue to receive medical care until they are cleared to go to a Foster Hero home.

Gemini and her HoroscopesCurrently, the lifesaving Mutternity Suites space is at capacity caring for three mama dogs and a total of 22 babies. AHS is seeking Foster Heroes for these sweet families, including Gemini and Her Horoscopes (pictured left), so additional moms and babies can be admitted.

Foster Heroes are a critical component of AHS’ mission to save the lives of the Valley’s most vulnerable pets. This year alone, upwards of 500 mom dogs and puppies will be given a second chance at life thanks to the Mutternity Suites and the fosters who care for them.

AHS provides Foster Heroes with everything they need, including medical care, food, toys, blankets, and more. All the foster home needs to provide is a quiet space with lots of love and care. Those interested in helping families like Molly and her pups can apply to become a Foster Hero at azhumane.org/foster.
