The Second Chance Animal Hospital™ is the largest shelter-based trauma center for homeless animals in the Southwest. Second Chance is dedicated to providing veterinary care for animals who no longer have families to provide for them.
Second Chance Animal Hospital, which was established in 1996, is an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited facility located at our Sunnyslope Campus. Second Chance has a staff of more than 30 veterinary medical professionals, including veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants and animal care specialists, who have chosen to dedicate their careers to shelter medicine.
Second Chance features state-of-the-art medical equipment, including digital x-ray machines, in-house diagnostic equipment, orthopedic instruments and dental equipment — all made possible through generous Arizona Humane Society donors — which allows us to provide prompt medical and surgical attention to more than 9,000 homeless animals that need our care each year. The hospital occupies an entire building with its own ventilation system and isolation ward. In 2010, again through the support of generous donations, Second Chance expanded its isolation ward, increasing its ability to potentially care for an additional 600 animals per year. In 2014, Second Chance opened a kitten nursery to help care for our youngest feline friends who aren’t quite ready to go up for adoption. And in 2015, we began treating the deadly parvo virus in our Parvo Puppy ICU.
The skilled vets at Second Chance can give new hope to an animal through a variety of different life-saving procedures, including fracture repairs, trauma surgery, wound treatment, amputations, malnourishment treatment, hip surgery and much more!
Many of the animals rescued by Arizona Humane Society EAMTs are treated at Second Chance, as the Arizona Humane Society is the organization who rushes to the aid of sick and injured animals throughout the Valley and who also investigates animal cruelty cases.
