We Need Your Help Now to End Puppy Mill Pets in Phoenix Pet Stores!

Written by: Arizona Humane Society

AHS supporters,

Below is an email that was received from the Humane Society of the United States in regards to a measure that the Phoenix City Council will be voting on at 3 p.m. today. The measure requires pet stores to only sell animals that have come from shelters or rescue groups. This measure certainly hits home as it has the potential to open the door for more shelter pets to get adopted. This article, Arizona Republic: Biting Back at Cruel Breeders, gives further insight into the ordinance as spearheaded by Councilwoman, Thelda Williams.

We need your immediate help in contacting and encouraging your Council Member to support this ordinance, which will strongly benefit animal welfare organization’s in the Valley and help in our efforts to combat pet overpopulation.

Just think how many more homeless pets’ lives we can save! Please help and contact your Council Member now!

Email from Humane Society of the United States:

Calling all Phoenix residents! Sorry for the short notice, but we need calls and emails before 3pm today! The Phoenix City Council is taking the amazing step of voting on a measure THIS AFTERNOON that would require pet stores to only sell animals that have come from shelters or rescue groups. No more puppy mill dogs in Phoenix pet stores! The meeting starts at 3pm, so get calls in NOW!

A puppy mill is an inhumane, commercial dog-breeding facility in which the health of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profits. By reducing the number of outlets that they sell through, we can reduce the number of animals suffering in those terrible conditions.

It looked as if they had the votes but there has been some last-minute opposition that we need to fight. Please call your Phoenix City Council member NOW and urge them to support this important issue! Use their online search to find your council member.

The following members voted yes in subcommittee – please thank them and urge their continued support! The phone number is listed at the top of the page. If you would like to follow up with an email, you can either use the online form or there is a link to the actual email address in the text above the form.
Councilwoman Williams (Co-sponsor of the measure – huge thanks!)
Councilman Valenzuela
Councilman Nowakowski
Councilman Johnson

Councilman Tom Simplot is co-sponsoring the measure with Thelda Williams, so he gets a big thanks, too: Councilman Simplot

I hear that Mayor Stanton is supportive: Mayor Stanton

So the folks that we really need to reach are Jim Waring, Bill Gates, and Sal DiCiccio. If anyone has contacts with people in those Districts, use ‘em!! You can say, “I’m calling about the proposed ordinance that would help stop puppy mills. Please do whatever you can to ensure this important issue passes.” (If you would like to add more about how there are already stores that only sell rescued animals, the terrible condition in puppy mills, the successful passage of similar ordinances in other areas…please do!)
Councilman Waring
Vice Mayor Gates
Councilman DiCiccio
