Five-week-old Kitten Rescued from Manhole

Emergency Animal Medical Technicians ™ work for days to rescue kitten

It took three days and the help of the City of Phoenix, but it was well worth it when Arizona Humane Society (AHS) Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ (EAMT™), Kelley Mallon, finally rescued the little five-week-old kitten, Tera, from a manhole in the center of 35^th Avenue just North of Greenway.

Over those three days, AHS EAMTs lowered food to the little kitten as they kept watch via AHS’ snake cam. Rescues like this are incredibly difficult for AHS’ EAMTs, as we need the City of Phoenix’s help in order to gain access to main city lines under major roadways. We are grateful to the City for their help in these rescues.

Kelley is currently in training as an AHS EAMT™ and the video shows just how rewarding these rescues are for AHS’ EAMTs. For Kelley, it was also pure joy in finally getting to hold her first-ever drain rescue. It will likely be the first of many.

Tera was transported to AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ where she was fully examined and received a bath. While in relatively good health, the little girl weighs in at just one pound and is now in foster care with Kelley as she gains another pound in order to go up for adoption in approximately three weeks. While there will likely be a lot of interest in adopting this resilient kitten, the story of these rescues sheds light on a very difficult time of year for the Arizona Humane Society and shelters across the state. Kitten season is here and we are in desperate need of foster homes for kittens ranging from just days old (neonatal kittens) up to eight weeks of age.
