- March is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month, and AHS wants to educate pet owners on the dangers that many common household items, medications, and food may pose to our pets.
- AHS’ President & CEO, Dr. Steven Hansen, recommends pet-proofing your home for your pets, similar to baby-proofing your home for small children. Before you leave your home, make sure your pets can’t get into potential poisons such as: cleaning products, medicine, foods like raisins, grapes, and chocolate, and common houseplants like lilies and oleanders, which are also toxic to pets.
- The most common category of these toxins is over-the-counter drugs, this includes ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory related drugs.
- Prior to joining AHS, Dr. Hansen spent 16 years with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), most recently as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer. He is one of a handful of veterinarians board-certified by the American Board of Toxicology and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology.

April 8-14: Dog Bite Prevention Week
