Rex & Owner

After a six-month deployment, Rex and his military dad, Amelito, are reunited at AHS’ Sunnyslope Campus.

Rex was just a puppy when his pet parent was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the Army.

Over the next six months, he grew into a gorgeous Golden Retriever as he learned the ways of the world through AHS foster parents, Ralph and Karen Frobe. The next several months consisted of trips, sometimes twice a day, to the dog park where “everyone knew Rex” as he made his rounds to both the pets and the people. But it was his best friend, Haku, an Akita, who Rex really went to see. They would spend hours wrestling and rolling around before Rex would hop back into the convertible he loved to go for rides in… with the top down, of course!

Rex & Foster Parents

A bittersweet goodbye between Rex and his foster parents, Karen and Ralph.

Still young, Rex’s energy and zest for life didn’t end there as he tore through hundreds of toys and sometimes leashes (three in one day!), but none of that mattered to the foster family who doted on him day in and day out. They said that Rex instantly fit right in and despite having fostered pets before, the Frobes became very attached to the loveable boy.

Six months later, as Rex was reunited with his owner, it was a bittersweet day for both the Arizona Humane Society and the foster family who had grown to love him so much. With his joyful owner Amelito by his side, a bag full of his toys and a special scrapbook, or “owner’s manual” as Karen lovingly called it, filled with details surrounding Rex’s puppyhood , he and Amelito headed to Colorado Springs, a perfect place for a Golden Retriever who just happens to love the snow!

In a twist of fate, Brandi finally finds the perfect home with the Frobe family.

In a twist of fate, Brandi finally finds the perfect home with the Frobe family.

Feeling lost without Rex, it was shortly after that Brandi, a year-and-a-half old Boxer, who had been turned into AHS twice, became the Forbe’s new pet. After her first two families had no time and patience for her, it looks like she has found the perfect home and perfect pet parents. Despite missing Rex, the Frobe family still feels as if it is a wonderful thing to be able to help a member of the military and their pet through AHS’ Project Active Duty program.
