AHS Takes on Hoarding Case

Arizona Humane Society’s animal cruelty investigators, in coordination with the Glendale Police Department, removed a total of 52 dogs from a home in Glendale on August 3rd. The owner was booked on 49 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals and three counts of felony cruelty to animals.

The animals were agitated and overheating, some fighting with one another. All were living without shelter or shade. They had food and water, but not enough.

Sadly, upon our cruelty investigators’ arrival, two of the animals were deceased in the backyard and one died en route to the Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital.  The 49 dogs, primarily Shepherd/Chow mixes, who range from six months to seven years old, are now under the care of AHS. Our top priority is their medical care and our trauma team is thoroughly examining all of the dogs.

Currently, the dogs are showing some fearful behaviors. AHS’ behavior team is giving the dogs time to relax and to adjust to their new environment. Over the next several days, we will begin working with them and providing them with enrichment activities.

Though we know the process will be slow, we have every hope that they will eventually be adoptable. We will continue to keep everyone updated.
