Chances are, you’ll find the answer here. But if you still have questions, please contact us—we’ll be happy to help!

  • Am I Ready to Foster?
  • Before you begin your orientation and application, make sure you meet the following qualifications.

    • 18 years or older
    • Must live in the Phoenix Valley Metropolitan Area
    • Must be able to keep foster pet separate from owned animals for 10–14 days; sick pets must be kept separate for the entire foster period
    • Owned pets must be spayed/neutered
    • Must live in a permanent address
    • Must be able to bring pets to our Papago Park Campus for all medical appointments
    • No felony convictions of any kind, or misdemeanors related to animal cruelty, drugs, theft, or violence
  • What Are Common Foster Cases?
  • Shelter Pets
Most of our foster pets are medical cases such as:

    • Illnesses like upper respiratory infections or kennel cough
    • Injuries like wounds or fractures
    • Orphaned babies (bottle babies)
    • Mothers and babies
    • Behavioral rehabilitation for pets who are fearful in shelter or need help developing good manners

    Owned Pets
We are proud to offer our Project Active Duty foster program for military families with animals in need of care.

    • Project Active Duty is for the pets of deployed members of the military. Launched as a response to the September 11th terrorist attacks, AHS started Project Active Duty as a way to give back to the brave men and women serving our country. This program allows loving pet owners leaving for a tour of duty to entrust their pets with AHS, providing not only peace of mind during their deployment, but comfort knowing that when they return, their pet will be waiting for them. These are typically long-term cases, anywhere from several months to a year or more.
  • Other Common Questions
    • “I work all day. Do foster pets need someone to be with them all of the time?” As a rule, no. Most of our Foster Heroes work full-time jobs, and are able to leave their foster pets at home during the day, just as they do with their own pets.
    • “How long will my foster pet be with me in my home?” The length of time differs according to the needs of each animal placed in foster care. It can vary from a few days to a month or more. Our foster matchmakers will help match you with the perfect pet for your lifestyle and availability.
    • “Where do I keep my foster pets?” A room with at least one window is best, but our feline friends may prefer a smaller space such as a bathroom. Foster pets must be kept separate from your own pets during the first 10–14 days of fostering. This will keep your own pets healthy and safe, by protecting them from possible contagious diseases. As an extra precaution, please ensure that your pets are current on their vaccinations.
    • “Can my foster pet play with my pets?” As mentioned above, foster pets must be kept separate from your own animals during the first 10–14 days of fostering. If your foster requires more than two weeks of care, you may introduce your foster pet to your own animals. Occasionally, foster pets may need additional separation time or confinement to a kennel. Our experienced staff is available to coach you on any unique circumstances that may arise.
    • “Does the Arizona Humane Society provide Foster Heroes with necessary supplies?” We provide you with all medication and medical supplies that your foster will need. A list of emergency telephone numbers is also provided to you. Moreover, we receive donations of food, blankets, toys, and more throughout the year and are happy to provide these basic needs to Foster Heroes upon request and availability, to help support the foster pet in your care.
    • “What do I do if my foster pet becomes sick, or, if already being treated for sickness or injury, seems to worsen in my care?” Foster pets are under the veterinary supervision of our trauma hospital. Please do not seek outside veterinary care. All concerns should be escalated to our Foster Concierge so we can assess and provide proper care for the pet’s needs. You are responsible for keeping all medical appointments for your foster pet.
    • “What happens after my foster pet is returned to AHS?” As long as the pet is medically and behaviorally sound, he or she will be spayed or neutered and put up for adoption.
    • “Where do I go to pick up and return my foster pet?” The majority of our pets will be picked up from our Foster Department located at our Papago Park Campus, 5501 E Van Buren St, Phoenix, AZ 85008. Occasionally, pets will need to be picked up from our South Mountain campus location or at one of our boarding partners.
    • “What happens if I want to adopt my foster pet or if I’ve found an adopter?” In most cases, you will have the first right to adopt. Simply let the Foster Concierge know before the pet is scheduled to return. Our Home-to-Home Heroes program encourages fosters to find adopters for their pets and handle the adoption process so the pet doesn’t have to spend additional time in the shelter.

    My Story:
    • Hi Foster Friends! My name is Theodore and I’m only about 10lbs! I’m currently looking for the perfect foster home to recover in. I recently had a Femoral Head and Neck Osteotomy (FHO), which is a type of hip surgery to help with some previous issues. While in foster, I’ll need to recover to help get back to my spunky self. To help with this, I’ll need some at-home physical therapy. My friends at AHS would love to tell you more about that! Do you think we could be snuggle buddies for a bit?
    My Treatment Plan Details:
    • I will need to have my gait rechecked 4 weeks after surgery. Pending on how my surgery went, I may need radiographs done at AHS every 4 weeks until healed. My first recheck appointment should be scheduled for approximately May 9th.
    • Radiograph appointments are scheduled as drop-offs between 7a and 8a, with a same day pickup between 4p and 5p.
    • My anticipated return date from foster is May 20th.
    My Needs:
    • Keep separate from all pets in the home for 10 days.
    • My e-collar must stay on at all times for 10-14 days until my skin sutures/staples are removed.
    • Ensure moderate activity until incision heals and sutures are removed.
    • Once the incision heals, there aren’t any restrictions on activity. Encourage active use of limb through slow long walks, swimming, and agility exercises.
    • I will need you to perform range-of-motion exercises 1-3 times a day with me.
    • Give ALL medications as directed.
    • AHS will provide food, medical care and medical supplies during the foster period.

    My Story:
    • Hi Foster Heroes! My name is Norma and my babies and I are looking for a cozy place to stay while I care for them. I am on a short course of diarrhea preventatives and will need to be given a powdered probiotic and two liquid dewormers while in your care. My babies will nurse off of me until they’re ready to transition to gruel but their weight will need to be monitored to ensure they’re gaining adequately. Do you have some spare room in your home and heart for me and my little ones?
    My Treatment Plan Details:
    • My first recheck appointment should be scheduled for approximately April 28th vax booster for mom.
    • Our next vaccine appointment should be scheduled for the week of April 28th for mom’s booster and May 22nd for the 1st vaccine for kittens at 6wks old.

    • Allow babies to nurse until 6 weeks old; you can then start to wean the babies onto gruel.
    • Medical staff will decide when the babies should be separated from mom.
    • Mom will be ready to be returned after she is separated from babies for 10 days and her milk dries up.
    • Babies will need to be fostered until 8 weeks old and of weight.
    • Babies will need their first vaccine at 6 weeks of age and every 2 to 3 weeks after that.
    • AHS will provide food, medical care and medical supplies during the foster period.

I will need to be given an antibiotic once per day, along with lots of love and pets! I recently had a dental procedure so I need to be fed for soft food only for a short period of time while my mouth heals. I’m a sweetheart and would love to get a break from the shelter in your home! Do I sound like a good fit for you?
    My Treatment Plan Details:
    • My first recheck appointment should be scheduled for approximately April 26th to check if kennel cough symptoms are improving, vaccine, and possible return.

    My Story:
    • Hi there Foster Heroes! My name is Origami and I am only about 9 pounds! I am a little man with a big heart who is looking for a place to stay while I heal up from a right-hind leg fracture that was surgically repaired with a bone plate by my amazing dog-tors here at AHS. I am in need of strict crate rest until my doctors clear me to increase my activity levels slowly as well as some pain management medication to help keep me comfortable. After my surgery, my staples started to become looser which lead to an open wound so my doctors were helping this get back on track with bandages and an antibiotic medication to help me heal. My wound is looking a whole lot better so this will just need to be monitored for any further opening, bleeding, discharge, or further concerns while in foster. Do you think you have a little extra space in your home and love in your heart for a little fellow like me? I promise my crate and I don’t take up too much space!
    My Treatment Plan Details:
    • I will need my incision rechecked around April 27th. My doctors will evaluate if I am ready to spend more time outside of my kennel at this time.
    • I will need to have radiographs done at AHS every 3-4 weeks until healed; my first recheck appointment should be scheduled for April 18th.
    • Radiograph appointments are scheduled as drop-offs between 7am and 8am, with a same day pickup between 4pm and 5pm.
    • I am up to date on my vaccines!
    • My anticipated return date from foster May 28th, depending on my healing.
    My Needs:
    • Keep separate from all pets in the home for 10 days.
    • My e-collar must stay on at all times for 10-14 days after surgery or until my sutures are removed.
    • I will need strict crate rest 24 hours a day for the first 2 weeks. My doctors will let you know when I’m ready to start spending time outside my kennel.
    • Crate rest can be hard for both of us, but it is absolutely necessary for my healing.
    • When I need to go potty, I can be carried outside or walked out on a very short leash. If I weigh over 25 pounds, I must be in single level home or first floor apartment.
    • I should be placing some weight on my leg 7-10 days after surgery. If I become lame or act extremely painful after starting to use the leg, notify my friends at AHS immediately!
    • I cannot run, jump, climb stairs or do any high impact activity.
    • I’ll need lots of enrichment to keep me entertained, my friends at AHS will give you some tips.
    • Give ALL medications as directed.
    • AHS will provide food, medical care and medical supplies during the foster period.

Because of my fracture, I need strict crate rest and pain management medication to help keep me comfortable. My Story:
    • Hi Foster Friends! My name is Maxine and I am cheerful, resilient 46 pound girl who is looking for a loving foster home because I have found myself in a bit of a ruff patch as I am recovering from a pelvic fracture after I was reported to have been unfortunately hit by a car. I am so grateful to have found my way to AHS to fix me up! I will need strict 24/7 crate rest to protect my healing and some pain management medication to help keep me comfortable. When I heal up a bit more, my doctors think I may need an FHO (femoral head ostectomy) surgery on my left hind leg as my hock joint is a bit swollen and the joint appears loose. I also am mending from some wounds around my legs after my accident so I am also on some antibiotic medication to help these heal. Despite facing numerous challenges, I refuse to be defined by setbacks and so I am so excited to be able to find the perfect foster home for me to recover. Do you think you could open your heart and home to a good girl in need like me?

    • I’ll need lots of enrichment to keep me entertained, my friends at AHS will give you some tips.

    My Story:
    • Hi there Foster Heroes! My name is Jameson and I am an adorable 36 pound pup who had a ruff start as I sustained a fracture to my left hind leg when I was a stray. I was lucky to make my way to AHS where my doctors helped me get back on track and put me on some pain management medication to keep me comfortable. As I have already had some time to heal, my doctors now decided to remove my splint as my fracture is looking quite a bit better. I do have some wounds on my leg that were under my splint that I am healing from. To help me heal, I will need strict crate rest to protect my bone during the remainder of my healing. Since I am a young, curious pup, the team at AHS will give you lots of tips on enrichment ideas to help keep me entertained while I am on crate rest. I am about 28 pounds right now but I am a growing boy! Do you think you have a little extra love to give to a sweet boy like me?
    My Treatment Plan Details:
    • My next recheck appointment to recheck the wounds on my leg should be scheduled for April 18th.
    • I will need to have radiographs done at AHS every 4 weeks until healed; my first recheck appointment should be scheduled for approximately May 9th.
    • Radiograph and splint/bandage change appointments are scheduled as drop-offs between 7am and 8am, with a same day pickup between 4pm and 5pm.
    • My anticipated return date from foster depending on my recovery is May 9th.
    My Needs:

    • Give ALL medications as directed. I may need a medication to help me keep calm in my kennel. Please do not hesitate to ask if I was not sent home one.
    • Please monitor my bandage/splint for foul smell, swelling, unraveling and ensure that it stays clean and dry.
    • If toes are left open, check toes for swelling daily; check top area of splint/bandage for signs of rubbing, swelling or infection.

    My Story:
    • Hello Foster Heroes! My name is Meredith and I am a sweet pup who is looking for a special foster home to rest in while I wait to have an amputation surgery of my right front leg with my doctors here at AHS due to a severe fracture I came into the shelter with. I am so grateful to have found my way here but I would LOVE to spend the remainder of my recovery time outside of the shelter as I have shown to get a little kennel stressed in this environment. My friends at AHS say I am super friendly and I have lots of energy so I would love for a Foster Hero to provide me with lots of enrichment and mind games since I can’t run and play with my bad leg at the moment. I will need leashed activity restrictions so that I am not running, jumping, or walking too long and will need strict crate rest if I am not being supervised until I recieve my amputation surgery. After my amputation, I will need about 2 weeks of healing time while I learn my new way around and for my incision to heal. Do you think you could help me on my healing journey?
    My Treatment Plan Details:
    • My amputation surgery should be scheduled within 2 weeks of going to foster.
    • Procedure appointments are scheduled as drop-offs between 7am and 8am, with a same day pickup between 4pm and 5pm.
    • My anticipated return date from foster is 10-14 days after my amputation surgery. Overall, I only need about 3-4 weeks of care!
    My Needs:
    • Keep separate from all pets in the home for 10 days.
    • I must keep my E-collar on for 10 – 14 days after surgery, until my skin sutures/staples are removed.
    • Please monitor my incision and call my friends at AHS if there is any opening, discharge, heat, excessive swelling or excessive redness.
    • Give ALL medications as directed; most medications are given twice daily.
    • AHS will provide food, medical care and medical supplies during the foster period.
    • In the shelter, I was a little stressed in my kennel.
    • I may have some energy but with my injury, I will need other ways to keep busy.
    • Puzzle toys, snuffle mats, lick mats, and other enrichment might help keep me busy throughout the day.
    • I may enjoy short walks but need to be careful about running and jumping.

I will be needing to wear my cone so that I do not mess with my insicion. I will also be on some pain management and antibiotic medication to help prevent any further infection.
