AHS Volunteer Milestone: Volunteer Julie Walks Her 5,000th Dog!

Wags for AHS Dog Walking Volunteer, Julie!

Dr. Juliet Stromberg, an ASU Professor Emeritus, began volunteering as a dog walker at the Arizona Humane Society in 2013. As an avid dog lover with a history of marathons under her belt, Julie felt she could combine two of her passions while giving back to homeless animals. On Friday, March 6, Julie reached a milestone when she took Tipsy, a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, for a walk. It may have been one of Tipsy’s first walks at AHS, but it certainly wasn’t one of Julie’s. In fact, Tipsy was the 5,000th adoptable dog that Julie has walked in her time as an AHS volunteer. Making the achievement even more impressive is that Julie’s total number of dog walking adventures has reached approximately 13,000! "I am so grateful to have the opportunity to volunteer as a dog walker at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion,” said Stromberg. “The dogs always make me smile, and I go home happy knowing I have eased the stress in their lives, just a bit, during this transitional time as they wait for the next phase of their life’s journey to begin." Julie has also used her background as a plant ecologist and botanist and expertise in riparian and wetland ecosystems to restore nature trails near AHS’ Campus for Compassion. The year-long project is to determine whether naturally maintained nature trails are feasible, which in turn would likely improve the mental well-being of AHS’ adoptable dogs and the people who care for them. Julie has also implemented a critter enrichment garden at AHS’ Campus for Compassion for any small visitors to the area. AHS is currently on the search for more dog-walking volunteers at its Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion (1521 W. Dobbins Road, Phoenix, AZ 85041)!
