Breaking News: AHS Seeks Information in Case of Injured Poodle

AHS, along with Silent Witness, is asking for the public’s help in the case of a 5-year-old Poodle who was transferred to AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. A reward up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction. The Poodle, now named Oliver, was found in the area of 3500 W. Van Buren in Phoenix with injuries to his face. Bloody, swollen and in great pain, X-rays in AHS’ trauma hospital revealed what looked like six metallic objects in his face and neck. AHS’ trauma team removed one of the fragments from his muzzle, but determined it would be safer to leave the others in place for the time being. In addition, Oliver is on daily pain management and wound care, treatments that will continue indefinitely. The trauma team also suspects that he may be blind in his right eye from his injuries. Because of the severity of his injuries and AHS’ work alongside law enforcement on more than 7,000 cases of animal cruelty each year, AHS was contacted to bring Oliver into our protective custody for the specialized medical care he needed. As that medical care continues, so too does the investigation into who may have done this to him. While Oliver is not currently up for adoption nor do we have a time frame of when that might be, our focus remains on his medical care and assisting law enforcement on tracking down who may be responsible. Anyone with information is urged to contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480.948.6377, or 480.837.8446 for Spanish) or online at  We are hopeful that our efforts last year to pass HB2671, a bill that increases penalties for egregious crimes against animals from a Class 6 to a Class 5, which can’t be reduced to a misdemeanor, will pay off for this sweet dog who didn’t deserve this cruel mistreatment. As always, we will continue to fight for him just as we have thousands of other sick, injured and abused homeless animals.
