After Six Weeks, Bryant Finds the Perfect Foster Heroes

In the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, We Have Unquestionably Been Faced With Uncertainty...

But we have also witnessed human kindness at its best. And Bryant couldn't agree more.  Sadly, Bryant’s story of survival isn’t all that uncommon for the Arizona Humane Society and the teams responsible for rescuing, treating and caring for the nearly 18,000 sick, injured and abused homeless pets who enter our doors each year. But Bryant’s story is different. All because of COVID-19. It was early January when Bryant was confiscated by law enforcement as part of an animal cruelty case. He was exuberant and loving and at first glance appeared to be rather healthy. Yet X-rays in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ revealed that Bryant would need not one, but two Femoral Head Ostectomies (FHO) surgeries, a surgery similar to that of a hip surgery. Bryant’s recovery would be long, tedious and further complicated by a need for a foster home in which Bryant was the only pet. The concern was that too much play time would affect his recovery. Days turned to weeks as Bryant waited in the shelter for a pet-free Foster Hero home. Then COVID-19 hit. After more than two months in AHS’ care and nearly six weeks waiting for a foster home, Emily, a first-year Midwestern University veterinary student, and her roommates, also veterinary and medical students, reached out to AHS wanting to help. School was suddenly on a forced break and they wanted nothing more than to help foster a pet who might be considered harder to place, as well as one recovering from an orthopedic surgery. Finally, it was the perfect fit for Bryant. And for Emily, she feels that “It is truly a blessing to be able to foster Bryant.” COVID-19 has changed our world and how we do things for the time being, but it will never change why we do them. And Bryant’s story reminds us that even in the darkest moments, light exists. Our Foster Heroes, and those who have stepped up during this time, remain such a bright light for our nonprofit organization, and for that, we are grateful.
