AHS Has a New Top Dog: Dr. Steven R. Hansen Named CEO

The Arizona Humane Society has a new top dog.

Steven R. Hansen, DVM, a 30-year veteran of animal health and welfare, has been named Chief Executive Officer of the Arizona Humane Society. Our homeless, injured or neglected animals have a new leading advocate who will guide AHS in its mission to become the animal welfare organization of the future.

Dr. Hansen is a visionary, innovative leader who comes to us from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), where he has spent the past 15 years, most recently as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining the ASPCA, Dr. Hansen was the Director of Veterinary Research for Wellmark International in Illinois and also practiced clinical veterinary medicine in Houston and Chicago.

He serves on a variety of mission-critical boards, including the Morris Animal Foundation’s Animal Welfare Advisory Board, the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Legislative Advisory Committee and on the executive committee of the American College of Animal Welfare. He received his BS and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Iowa State University and received an MS and MBA from the University of Illinois.

We are excited to usher in a new era with Dr. Hansen, who will officially join AHS on October 21. He will champion the evolution of our organization by implementing our newly adopted strategic plan which focuses on saving the lives of more animals. He will also partner with our Board of Directors and dedicated staff to engineer and steer AHS’ future and build shared vision, values, strategies and focus to align the organization in common goals and purpose. But most importantly, he will be our homeless pets’ greatest voice as we continue our mission to safeguard, rescue, shelter, heal, adopt and advocate for animals in need.
