Guide to Writing Advocacy Letters

We share a passion for animals, but the key successful advocacy is channeling that passion into effective advocacy. Here are a few tips to make the most of your communication with elected officials:

• Do your homework. Include the bill number in your correspondence and make sure you’re reaching out to legislators prior to their action.
• Be specific. Ask for their support or opposition to a specific bill or action. Sure, we ultimately want legislators to “support animals,” but help them figure out how to accomplish that with a vote on a specific bill.
• Be nice. This is an easy one! Your voice represents the animal welfare community, so do not include threats, profanity or rude language.
• Check your spelling!
