If you are or have been a pet owner, chances are, you’ve experienced the thrill of that sloppy kiss on the face from your furry friend. It may seem more like a lick, but it’s a show of unconditional love that’s sure to produce a warm, fuzzy feeling. And it’s that warm, fuzzy feeling of owning a pet that can greatly enhance and improve the lives of seniors.
In fact, more and more studies show that seniors with companion animals generally experience physical, emotional and social benefits – and in some cases, live longer as a result. Research shows that owning a pet:
-
Can reduce stress and anxiety, as well as feelings of loneliness
and isolation -
Helps you stay connected and experience a sense of wellbeing
-
Can increase coordination, balance and muscle strength
-
Provides unconditional love, affection and companionship
-
Is linked to increased chances of survival after a heart attack
-
Can reduce blood pressure
So happy together
Everyday we experience the joy of pairing shelter pets with seniors. In fact, seniors can play a vital role in giving loving dogs, cats, rabbits and other small companion animals, that were homeless, unwanted, abused or neglected, get a second chance at a happy, healthy life. And we make it easy and affordable for seniors to adopt a pet, thanks to our PAWS (Partnering Animals With Seniors Program).
PAWS provides discounted fees for those ages 60 and up who adopt a pet from our shelters. Seniors who qualify can adopt a cat aged 2 years or older at no cost or a dog 2 years or older for a mere $25. We also offer those 60 years and older a 15 percent discount on the adoption fees for other pets at our shelter.
Just like any prospective adopter, you’ll undergo a prescreening process with one of our adoptions counselors to find the right pet for you. And you’ll need to provide current, valid photo ID and proof of address. If you live in a rental property, we’ll need a copy of your rental agreement and a telephone number for your property manager so we can verify that pets are welcome.
For more information, please visit any of our adoption locations or call us at 602.997.7586 ext. 1045.
