Found a Pet

Found a Pet?
Look at that little guy…he’s adorable! You found him burrowed in a tight space by your garage. With such a lost, lonely look on his face, you just know somebody’s missing him.

If you don’t find the pet’s family, take her to a shelter so she can be scanned for a microchip. Thousands of pets do not have visible ID, such as a collar and tag, but have been implanted with a microchip that will track back to his or her rightful owner.

So how can you help make that happy reunion happen? Click on the link that applies to the animal and we’ll tell you!

Found a Dog?

Healthy dogs over 3 months
Does he look healthy? Does he look more than 3 months old? Then by law, he must be turned into Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. You can contact the facility closest to you for information on turning in a found pet.

If your newfound friend has some form of identification, you can bring him to our Sunnyslope Facility. We’ll gladly try to notify his owner and help get him home safely. We do request a donation per animal or litter you are surrendering. This donation helps cover the many costs associated with providing quality care for every animal that is turned in to us.

Puppies under 3 months and sick and injured dogs
If the stray dog is younger than three months or appears sick, you can turn the dog into our Sunnyslope Facility. Our Admissions Department is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (closed on major holidays).

Does the dog look injured?
Don’t try to move her – even the sweetest-looking animal might snap or bite when injured and scared. Instead, call our Animal Rescue team at 602.997.7585, ext. 2073 (“0” after hours) to have the dog picked up by one of our EAMTs.

Found a Cat?
You have two choices. You can bring a found cat to our Sunnyslope Facility, where our Admissions Department is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed on major holidays). If the pet has some form of identification, we’ll be glad to contact the owner and help her return home safely.

We do request a donation per animal or litter that you are surrendering to help with the cost associated with providing quality care for every animal turned in to us. If the animal is feral or trapped, an additional fee may apply. If you have questions about turning in an animal to our shelter, give us a call and we’ll answer them.

As a second option, you turn the cat in to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. You can contact the facility closest to you for information on turning in a found pet to their shelter.

How to Help Make a Happy Ending
Who doesn’t love a happy ending? And the good part…you don’t have to be a big shot Hollywood producer to make it happen. In fact, here are some things you can do if you find a stray pet:

  • Post flyers in and around your neighborhood or where the pet was found, after getting the OK from the proper authorities, of course.
  • Include an easy-to-read title, such as “Found Cat” .
  • Provide a brief description of the found animal (i.e. Female , brown tabby with white tail).
  • Leave your name and number.
  • Omit one or two of the pet’s unique identifying marks so you can make sure you have the true owner of the pet .
  • Consider placing a “Found Pet” classified ad in the newspaper – many large papers do it for free!
  • Register and search for the found pet on Pets 911 either by phone at 1.888.PETS911 or on the Internet at www.pets911.com
  • Register the found pet with Arizona Pet Line by calling 602.252.2727.
  • Register the found pet with Missing Mutts by calling 480.898.8914 (they help cats, too!).
  • DO NOT try to re-home the pet yourself, as a loving family may be agonizing over their beloved pet’s disappearance. You can always bring the found pet to a shelter like ours or Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, where we make the animal’s welfare our
    top priority.
