AHS THANKS COMMUNITY FOR GIVING FOREVER HOMES TO 450+ PETS

August 30, 2010

(PHOENIX) – More than 450 pets no longer call themselves homeless after Arizona Humane Society’s weekend adoption special. By Sunday evening, 248 cats and kittens, 193 dogs and puppies and 13 critters got their second chance at a happy life. During the two-day event, AHS waived its adoption fees in lieu of monetary donations in hopes of getting more animals out of the shelter and into their forever homes.

“The event was a success in that we were able to make our belief that every pet deserves a good life a reality for so many pets in such a short time,” said Kimberly Searles, AHS communication manager. “Before this weekend, we had adoptable animals waiting in the wings because there simply wasn’t enough room on the adoption floor.”

The nonprofit organization also managed to raise $11,000 in donations over the weekend. The financial support is crucial to AHS, as the organization is not associated with any other humane society nor does it receive any government funding.

“Adopters not only saved the lives of the animals they took home, but they also helped countless others through their donations,” said Searles.  “We would like to thank everyone who came to our shelters and adoption locations to give a second chance to these amazing pets.”

While the weekend special helped to relieve the overcrowding at AHS’ shelters, the potential to see high numbers remains. Pet overpopulation continues to be a problem in Arizona. As such, AHS reminds pet owners to please spay or neuter their pets. The nonprofit features two stationary low-cost spay/neuter clinics at its shelters, as well as a mobile clinic that travels throughout the Valley.
