ABC 15: Heart Disease in Dogs Linked to Diet

Written by: Arizona Humane Society

News Highlights:

  • The FDA is alerting pet owners and veterinarians to unusual reports of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in breeds of dogs that usually are not afflicted genetically. DCM is a disease that affects the heart muscle.
  • The common factor in these cases seems to be diets that are high in potatoes, peas, lentils and other legumes listed high in the ingredient list, and these diets are often advertised as “grain free.”
  • Symptoms include difficulty breathing, cough, weakness and collapse.
  • Until a definitive answer is known, the Arizona Humane Society’s President and CEO, Dr. Steven Hansen, recommends feeding canine companions a balanced, quality diet that avoids high concentrations of potatoes and legumes. As always, please see your veterinarian for advice specific to your pet!
