Keep Your Dog Safe This Summer

See our helpful tips to ensure your four-legged friend has a happy and healthy summer!

  1. Check the pavement before walking. If it is too hot for you to keep your hand on for seven seconds, it is too hot for your dog. Your dog may take a little bit to get used to them, but they are great for protecting your dog’s feet during summertime walks.
  2. 2. Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. If you see a dog left in a hot car, a new law allows Good Samaritans the right to take action without risk of civil liability. Learn more about the law and its provisions.3. Limit hiking in the desert during the summer months! Phoenix Trails are closed to all dogs when temperatures reach 100° and above. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and the Parks Board have adopted this policy in an effort to protect your dog on high temperature days.

    4. Stay out of the heat and sign up for indoor classes like Puppy Parties, Tricks, and Recall Rover to get some energy out in an air-conditioned space. See summertime dog training classes here.

    5. Cure summertime boredom by hiding portions of your dog’s breakfast or dinner around the house or backyard for them to search for, instead of always placing food in their bowl.

    6. Summer parties are fun, but remember that food and drink commonly found at barbecues can be poisonous to pets. Click here to learn more about what human foods are harmful for animals.

    7. For visits to the lakes or rivers, a life vest can be an important life-saving device for your pup. Make sure to check the rules for dogs at your waterside destination.

    8. Summertime swimming? Never leave dogs unsupervised around a pool — not all dogs are good swimmers.

    9. Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so make sure they have access to plenty of fresh, clean water at all times!

    10. Most importantly, know the symptoms of overheating in pets.
